Colombia: Declaration from the Peasants' Summit as preparations for Biodiversity COP16 gather pace
On 29 and 30 August, in the run-up to the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), to be held in Cali later this year, a delegation from La Via Campesina was present at the Peasant Summit in Fusagasugá, Cudinamarca, Colombia. Since the 1980s, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and institutions like the International Monetary Fund have imposed economic reforms that undermined domestic food production and increased reliance on US food imports.

The U.S. experience makes it abundantly clear that "supply management" is unworkable without a guaranteed minimum price adjusted for inflation. The first essential element is the price support. A price support is a minimum price that the buyer must pay to obtain the commodity.
