Brazilian Government Honours La Via Campesina

On Monday, May 27, 2025, at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasília, the Brazilian government, represented by the Vice President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, presented La Via Campesina with the Order of Rio Branco—one of the nation's highest honors in diplomacy.

This recognition not only distinguishes a trajectory: it is a cry of affirmation for those who struggle, sow, resist, and dream. It is the institutional echo of the peasant struggle as an unstoppable force that transforms the world.

Sumoud Convoy— a powerful act of grassroots international solidarity

The overland "Steadfastness" Convoy to break the siege on Gaza travelled from Tunisia on the morning of Monday, June 9, 2025, under the slogan: "The chains must be broken." The convoy travelled through Tunisia, Libya, and intended to cross over to Egypt, with the goal of reaching the Rafah crossing. But it was stopped in eastern Libya by the authorities in Benghazi, near Sirte, preventing it from continuing its journey to Rafah. This obstruction, coupled with the systematic repression by Egyptian authorities — who have officially declared that the convoy will not be allowed to cross into Gaza — reflects a deliberate attempt to stifle solidarity.

La Via Campesina at the SB62 in Bonn: Peasant Agroecology vs. Climate Commodification

Peasant movements like La Via Campesina have upheld a clear position in these spaces: "Grants, not loans"—a principle that affirms that climate finance should not be an additional burden but rather unconditional reparation for the historic injustice and ecological debt of the Global North to the peoples of the South.

Diversity of Peoples and Biodiversity: A Shared Struggle for Life

There is no Food Sovereignty without biodiversity, and no biodiversity without respect for human diversity. In our seeds, knowledge, crops, and ways of life, diversity is the principle that sustains life against monoculture, agribusiness, and capitalist destruction.

Just as we defend the free circulation and protection of our native seeds, we also defend the right of our bodies—seeds of our identities—to bloom in freedom.

Making Sense of Tariffs – A Briefing Note by La Via Campesina

Caught between a hysterical neoliberal narrative that vilifies tariffs and a U.S. administration that weaponizes them as tools of imperial foreign policy, this briefing note seeks to clarify La Via Campesina's position on the issue. Intended for internal training within La Via Campesina, this note compiles various arguments in support of using tariffs and non-tariff barriers (NTBs) to protect small-scale food producers and to promote food sovereignty and economic self-determination.

What's going on in Panama?

In Panama, after the massive mobilizations of the last weeks throughout the country, the Government has resorted to the narrative of conspiracy against the democratic order, with the aim of discrediting the protests, minimizing the rejection of Law 462, justifying the excessive repression and the violation of human rights and the Political Constitution. On May 23, social organizations, unions and civil society carried out a multi-sectoral march to the Government headquarters; however, the President, Raul Mulino refused to receive them. On the contrary, a high contingent of national police and riot units refused to receive the list of demands and proposals that would allow a prompt and peaceful solution to the social and political crisis in the country. La Via Campesina called for solidarity and demanded a stop to the repression and criminalization of legitimate protest for rights.

Your donations help us remain autonomous!

La Via Campesina depends on funding from our supporters who are committed to the vision of food sovereignty. Your support allows the global movement to remain autonomous and independent of all influences, and to voice our grassroots proposals and demonstrate our agroecological practices in international and national policy-making spaces. We believe that the transformation of our society into a more inclusive and equitable one requires the collective efforts of all who firmly believe in the ideas of social justice and equity.
